Professional Women in Building Week

Professional Women in Building Week celebrates women as an important part of the residential construction industry. At S.C. Swiderski, women make up a large portion of our leadership team as well as many teams throughout the company. Sierra Braun, one of the Architectural Drafters here at S.C. Swiderski, wrote about her experience.

“Working in the construction industry has always been a dream of mine, specifically in architectural design. I strive to soak up as much knowledge as I can from those around me, actively building my foundation for becoming an Architect. Watching a project go from a napkin sketch to reality will never get old. Each project brings more opportunities to learn and develop both myself and my teammates. Being a key player in guiding the design from development through construction is challenging but extremely rewarding, and it is super exciting to work at a company with so much growth and opportunity within reach,” says Braun.

Sierra has been with SCS for 1 year and is an integral part of our success, along with all of our employees. As the building industry is typically a male dominated industry, SCS has a female site superintendent, 2 female project managers, a female field manager, female general laborers and many other female employees who are an essential part of the success of SCS. SCS is proud to hire a diverse group of people and we can't thank our employees enough for their hard work. As we celebrate Professional Women in Building Week, we invite everyone to take a moment to reflect on the history of women in the AEC (Architecture, Engineering, Construction) field and the bright future they have with SCS.

S.C. Swiderski Hosts SCS Chilton Groundbreaking Ceremony

S.C. Swiderski and the Chilton County Chamber of Commerce hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for the multi-family project, SCS Chilton, on September 13th. We were joined by Chilton Mayor Thomas Reinl, City Administrator David DeTroye, Chamber representatives, community members and partners on the project including MSA Professional Services and Abby Bank.

SCS Chilton features 102 market rate apartment homes with 14 different floor plans ranging from 702 to 1360 sq. ft. On the site, there will be 15 multi-family buildings total using 3 different building styles which include one, two and three bedroom apartments and three bedroom duplexes. The site also has a property management office for the onsite property management team from S.C. Swiderski. Each apartment home has an attached or detached garage included, separate entrances, private laundry and either a patio space or balcony. Rent rates include heat, water, sewer, cable, Wi-Fi, trash, lawn care and snow removal. The apartment homes are pet friendly for cats and dogs under 50 pounds. SCS Chilton is in a convenient location located off of Irish Road just south of US Highway 151.

“We appreciate the support of the Mayor, municipal staff and Mr. DeTroye for this project. Their partnership was key to making this project feasible. We are excited to bring quality housing to this community,” said Jacqui McElroy, Director of Business Development at S.C Swiderski. SCS Chilton will provide a variety of maintenance-free housing options at a wide range of price points adding much needed housing in the area. S.C. Swiderski is working with local subcontractors and tradespeople on the project and are committed to being an active member of the Chilton community for the long-term by adding property management jobs on-site and contributing to local charitable organizations through their CAS Committee.

GUEST BLOG | MORGAN | HOMES CONCIERGE

When I was 3 years old, I was sitting in the shopping carts asking complete strangers to go home with them, solely to go and look at their home. Old or new, interior, or exterior, I was and always have been so invested in learning and seeing what each home had to offer.

If I am being completely honest, I never thought it was possible to find a job that would fulfill my dream to work with homes. It wasn’t until the end of my Marketing Internship with SCS that I knew it was possible. SCS mentioned they were launching a single-family homes division and they were willing to give me a shot at this brand-new position titled Homes Concierge.

As you can see, I ended up taking the position. My position here at SCS entails being with one of our homes from the very beginning all the way to the end. I plan which floorplan and model is built, where it is built and if the subdivision will be aesthetically appealing. The next step is selecting interior and exterior finishes and materials. Exterior materials include but are not limited to shake, siding, board, and batten while interior materials include but are not limited to countertops, cabinetry, flooring, light fixtures, and tile. After everything is selected, I move to the next step of the process, working with the client to ensure the home has everything they want, make changes if applicable, and take them through the purchasing process. This is the part of the job that is very interesting to me. I graduated with a degree in communications; therefore, I find communicating with others very engaging. Every person, every home, every location is different, this allows me to do different things every day. While communicating with someone, you must read the situation, the person, and the home you are working with.  There is not one way to communicate with a person rather there are several ways which makes every day different.

Graduating school and immediately stepping into this position has allowed me to use the knowledge I have and to learn from the other employees around me. If I have a question about any matter, I can always count on someone from SCS to know the answer. Every employee is always eager to help one another succeed which makes a great work environment.

Never in a million years did I think I would end up working in the position I am now. I never thought it was possible to do so many things I always loved to do. Needless to say, my three-year-old self would be very proud.
